You should probably try -c1 before going to -c3 as the latter option incurs
more overhead, according to to docos. The -u1 flag lets the driver unmask
other interrupts while processing disk interrupts, which is handy for modem
connections, eg.
If hdparm seems kludgy, just think of FreeBSD. I had to recompile the kernel
and add several options, plus flags to the options consisting of OR'd 16-bit
values (almost caused a brain meltdown, that), to the EIDE drivers. Then I
had to boot into single mode to enable another go-faster option... it's
pretty good now though.
