NIS will do what you want. One (or more) machines act as a server, the
others request user authentication. NIS used to be called Yellow Pages,
until British Telecom objected for trademark reasons. "Linux Unleashed"
(at least the RedHat 5.2 version) has a very good treatment, as well as
the "stock" books (DNS and Bind, Unix Sys Admin, etc).
