First, you need a kernel with APM support compiled as well as the option
to poweroff the machine on shutdown enabled. I am not sure how redhat
kernels are compiled by default, I usually compile my own from the virgin
sources.

Second, your machine has to support the powerdown feature, which obivously
yours does as Windows works.

WARNING: The "proper" way to halt your machine is 'shutdown -h now'. The
current version of the SysV init supports using 'poweroff' instead, but if
you ever use a different version of UNIX or even some distributions,
poweroff will either not work or could possibly damage the system.
