Thanks Chuck.  Thanks also to Brandt & Barry.  You are 100% correct. Getting
the devel stuff solved the problem.  I didn't get it originally because of
the following statement on www.gnome.org:


The steps for getting GNOME installed are as follows: 

        Download listed package files 
        Select the links to the .rpm files listed, and save them using your
web browser. 
        Users will not need to download development packages unless they are
going to develop or compile GNOME packages. 
                         ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Anyway, problem solved.
