Enlightenment is window manager.  Gnome is an desktop environment.  Gnome
doesn't have an associated Window manager, but Enlightenment is sort of a
defacto standard.  (KDE, which is also a desktop environment, comes with a
window manager, kwm, but that can also be changed.)  

You can run enlightenment (or any other WM) without gnome, but you can't
run gnome without a window manager.
