I haven't even looked at a 5.0 cd yet, but I'll offer a suggestion.  Try
this:

cp acroread.tar /root/read/acroread.tar.gz

gzip -d acroread.tar.gz

tar -xvf acroread.tar

It's possible that they just named the file incorrectly.

Give it a shot.
