This is a shot in the dark, but I figure it's worth a try -- over the
weekend, my RH5 system stopped recognizing its cd-rom:

[root@fred /root]# mount /mnt/cdrom
mount: /dev/cdrom is not a valid block device

I've checked my physical connections, they're fine. The cd-rom is
getting power and there's a disk in the drive. I also haven't switched
kernels. This machine's BIOS never did recognize the cd-rom explicitly,
so looking there is no good.

/dev/cdrom is a symlink to /dev/hdb, just as it's always been.

Any hints?
