I agree that the new WD drives are not as good as the ones three years ago.  I own
a consulting company and we used to recomend WD a few years back, but will not buy
them now.  The best best drives in IDE that we have found are IBM and Segate.  I
think the IBM are fasters, but both have been good on reliability.
