The good folks in my local users group have offered suggestions, but I'm
still lost. Here's the situation.
I can invoke X windows as root, but not as a user. When I log in as
rshepard (a legitimate entry), and type 'startx', I get this message:
Fatal Server Error: xf86OpenConsole: Server must be running with root
permissions.
When I try to invoke xdm, I'm told (wrongly, of course!) that, "Only root
wants to run xdm."
What am I overlooking here? The associated question is what goes in each
configuration file, what are the files' names, and in what directories are
they located?
I wish there was better coverage of X in books like "RH Linux Unleased,
2nd Ed." and "Running Linux, 2nd Ed.". They don't tell me what I'm not
doing, or doing improperly. I have read the man pages and looked at the
HOWTOs, but without enlightenment. Where do I go to learn more? It's not a
wm problem, and I'm using the latest xfree86 server (3.3.2) with support
for my Diamond Viper V330 AGP video card.
X works OK when I log in as root, but I need to learn how to configure it
for users, too. And I don't want to start X every time I get into linux.
Only when I need to.
TIA,
Rich
