I've got RedHat 5.0 running, recompiled kernel, on a P90/64 MB of RAM. Although RAM is practically used up, CPU is quite idle. I'm running into a problem delivering POP mail (first I was using the IMAP/POP3 daemon that comes with RedHat 5.0, then the update, now Qpopper from Qualcomm). Often when users are pulling mail off this machine, it stops responding. All new requests seem to "hang". I can restore this either by waiting, or by giving the inetd a "kill -HUP" and all goes well. Note that this problem occurred on the regular/uncustomized kernel. I've used 2 different network cards (first a 3c509 ISA card, then a 3c590 PCI card). Both Network cards utilized the loadable modules, rather than compiled in support. Is this a resource issue? More RAM? I'm confused as I supported the same number of people on a 70 MHZ Sparcstation /Solaris 2.4 on 32 MB of RAM. Any tips on troubleshooting this would be very much appreciated!
