Do other sound apps work? Can you play a wav file or an audio file?

Over here, netshow works fine, and so does rvplayer. But then, I'm using
kernel 2.1.76 plus a patch for my sound card -- I still have
difficulties getting rvplayer to work under older kernel revisions.

One thing to check for sure is /proc/devices; see if sound is listed.
