Eric,
MySQL and is by a Swedish company
called Tcx (http://www.tcx.se). MySQL
comes with a perl module called DBI that allows easy access to the DB
server. Actually, DBI works with several SQL servers but MySQL is one of
them.
The features of MySQL that I found attractive:
* MySQL users are stored independent of UNIX users
* ODBC driver available for accessing via Win 95/NT clients
* Supposedly very fast (at the cost of no rollback and no stored procs or
triggers)
* Can handle large databases - they claim on the order or tens of billions
of records
* Handles long record lengths
* Handles several sizes of BLOBs - I need this to store email messages
* Free to use on commercial web site
They only drawbacks that I can see so far are no rollback and no stored
procs or triggers but I don't need these for my application. There are
several other SQL servers for Linux out there but the others I have looked
at are either commercial and very expensive or GNU license and fairly
limited and unsupported (other than by the net). MySQL is developed and
supported commercially but distributed freely - support contracts are
encouraged but not required. The only time licensing is required is when
you sell the product or include it with another product that is being sold.
