Well, you really don't need to upgrade everything. Say for instance
you've got Redhat 5.0 and some updates applied. The security ones are
probably the ones to upgrade as soon as possible, and if you've
subscribed to redhat-announce, those come through, with directions as to
what files to upgrade. If you download something that requires a new
version of something else, then upgrade the something else.

Otherwise, only upgrade things that you frequently use. If you don't
play chess, then there's no reason to upgrade xboard/gnuchessx packages
until a newer release of Redhat comes out. And the new releases come (I
think) frequently enough that you can get by not doing much of any
upgrades (except when you find a problem, or a danger in an existing
package) until the next version comes out.
