Read Eric Raymond's 'How to become a Hacker':

And find something you like to do, not something that needs to be done.
Spend some time configuring your work environment so its comfortable for
you to work in.  If you need to spend some time learning emacs, or
figuring out how gcc works, do that first.  There are several programming
environments (IDE, if you will) available, including SlickEdit, which is
probably the best, but commercial, and about $200.

Sure.  And if you have a really good idea, you can tell people about it,
and recruit their help.
