I'm a newbie too.
I found that I couldn't add a network card using kernelcfg after the
initial installation was complete. Same problem you had - I made the
entries, but they didn't "stick." I found that I had to add entires to
conf.modules by hand.
For your card, try adding these lines to your /etc/conf.modules file:
alias eth0 smc-ultra
options eth0 io=0x2c0 irq=5
If it is a pnp card, use the accompanying utility software (in DOS) to
disable the pnp feature and set the irq and io address.
