I seem to have really screwed things up trying to upgrade to the latest
Gimp (0.99.27), GTK (1.0.0), and SANE (0.72). I compiled and installed
all three from the tarballs, and that seemed to go fine. Gimp would run
Ok, but SANE would exit thusly:

kilgore />> xscanimage &
[1] 16590
kilgore />>
** ERROR **: sigsegv caught

[1]+ Exit 1 xscanimage

So then I tried a different version of GTK, an rpm this time from Red
Hat's ftp site (gtk-0.99.970925-2...) Gimp didn't like that one either:

kilgore />> gimp: error in loading shared libraries
: undefined symbol: gdk_get_display

So last night I tried to uninstall everything and go back to three
versions that had worked together previously: gimp-0.99.15,
gtk+-971109, and sane-0.68. I installed all three of these (plus the
gimp-data-min and data-extras) from the rpm's this time. Now, both Gimp
and SANE fail with the same error:

kilgore />> gimp: error in loading shared libraries
libc.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Anyone know how to fix this? Anyone sucessfully running the latest
versions of Gimp, SANE, and GTK together on RH5.0? If so, I love to
know how you did it. (ie, exactly which releases and whether they were
rpm's or compiled.)

Thanks muchly for any pointers - I miss my scanner! :-(
