A BIOS upgrade is one way to do the trick, but a more useful way would
probably be the BIOS extension software that most drive makers include with
all hard drives beyond 528 Mb in size.
It's usually either included with a drive on a floppy (sometimes) or on a
special partition on the drive which you're encouraged to use to create the
disk before you repartition the drive. (more often, depends on manufacturer
and model.)
If yours didn't come with a floppy and you didn't preserve this software,
boy do you feel dumb now. :-)
Seriously, you might be able to get the software from the manufacturer's web
site, or by calling their tech support.
Alternately, you local computer store probably has oodles of copies laying
around.
The software is installed on the boot sector of your HD, and it extends your
BIOS in memory to address the larger drive.
It makes you do some futzing around if you want to boot from a floppy, but
it is a cheap way to extend the life of a crappy old motherboard. :-)
