Fred, you might be able to do this with mpage (try "man mpage").  The -O & -E 
options will print based on 4 page sets.  You'll have to experiment with 
different margin & indent settings, and possibly reverse the pages to get it 
to work, but it pretty much does what you're asking for.

I'd experiment with a small (about 8 page) document, save the settings that 
work in your profile, and then print the document you're trying to print as a 
booklet.
