There is no need to recompile the program.  You just need to set the proper Xresources 
(probably in .Xdefaults).  I use something like this:

XScreenSaver.lock:      True
XScreenSaver.lockTimeout:       5
XScreenSaver.timeout:           1
XScreenSaver.cycle:             5

which makes the screensaver come on after one minute, lock after five, and the 
graphics hack changes every five minutes.
