Pretty early on. However, there were numerous packages that installed with
no error statement. After about a half hour of installing (interspersed
with many failed error statements), Linux installation aborted, saying it's
now safe to reboot!

I was trying a zero-floppy install...stricly from CD-ROM. However, I have
used the floppy technique, too...same problems. I have reformatted both the
boot.img and supp.img floppies several times...no error on either diskette.
I have correctly transferred the boot.img and supp.img using rawrite.exe.

I think I'll have to give up my dream of being a Linux user. The time
wasted is worse than I can accept, considering other parts of my life which
need to be taken care of...such as my job. I'm a part time consultant for
PC users: Windoze, DOS, mainly. I have never in my life experienced such an
awful time just trying to install a new OS.
As much as I abhor the horrible program that is Windoze, and other
Microsoft products, looks like I'm just plain stuck with it. I have been
boycotting Microsoft for over two years now, and the only software still
remaining on my system, that is from M$, is the OS itself.
It was my hope that Linux would be the OS to usurp Windoze, now that a
large segment of the populace is computer literate, and the courts are
raising their eyebrows over Gates' apparant years of corrupt business
practices. I'm sorry to say, Linux will not become the OS for personal
users. It remains a hacker's OS, or one for business, just like any other
Unix software. These businesses rely on at least one Unix hacker to
maintain their system, including for Linux. It is unfortunate that Linux is
being promoted as ready for prime time...it most certainly is not. But many
people will be badly burned as a result...much worse than I was.
I am glad that I only wasted $16 on Linux CD-ROMs from CheapByte...and that
I studied Linux books in bookstores, rather than paying exorbitant prices.
My plans to convert some of my clients to Linux are dead in the water. If
the Linux community is really serious about seducing Windoze users to their
OS, they'd better get cracking, and create something that is worthy to be a
better OS than Windoze ever was or could be.
Thank you for your efforts...but there doesn't seem to be any progress
possible, as no one really has an explanation for the error
readings...despite my contacts in two Linux newsgroups, and three Linux
listservers. Not a single book could I find, that described, even briefly,
explanations for these error statements, not even just a list of them. I
only know one person who uses Linux...he raves about it all the time...yet
when I told him of my installation problems, he never once offered to come
over and take a look.
I really cannot think about Linux any more, and I am sorry to say, it left
a very sour taste in my mouth...as if I were dealing with Microsoft
consultants all over again.
I have wasted many hours over one month, just to get the damn OS installed.
I'd better quit know, before the cuss words start flying.
