it sounds like the problem is more one of finding the proper modeline
rather than a deficiency in the server. well, except for the metro-x
screen corruption, but metro-x always has been rather dodgy. i do
think that the configuration tools for the various X servers out there
are lacking. xvidtune is probably the most powerful one, but it's also
the most crusty looking. XConfigurator is limited and XF86Setup is
better, but also not quite there yet. at least XF86Setup dumps you
into xvidtune at the end whereas metro-x doesn't give you that
flexibility.
i'm currently running 1280x1024 at 80 Hz on my 17" monitor with XFree
3.3.1 on a millenium I and it's immaculate. took a little tweaking of
monitor settings to get a small border, but not too much and i haven't
had to mess with it since. a friend at work has a similar setup with a
millenium II, XFree 3.3.2, and a sony 19" monitor and it's also near
perfect. here's the modeline we use:
ModeLine "1280x1024" 150 1280 1320 1480 1728 1024 1029 1036 1077 +hsync +vsync
hope this helps,
tim
