When I first started 'playing' with Linux (early Slakware) I understood
that the /usr/local directories were used for installing applications
additional to the main /bin, /sbin etc pgms.

I have noticed though that some installations now use /opt and SO4.0 seems
to use /home for many of its files. What is the thinking behind this
divergence from what I understood to be the FSSTND
