As someone pointed out to me, I forgot to mention in the above list:
libc-devel-5.4.44-1rh42.i386.rpm which I DID install along with the
others.

Many thanks to James Boorn for suggesting that I upgrade to make-3.75-1,
as it has taken care of make crashing.  Can anyone else think of something
I should upgrade?  If not, I suppose I'll keep plugging along until 
something else cores on me. =)
