About a month ago I posted a question concerning IPMASQUERADING to this
list. I received two answers the same day, from "DB" and from John D.
Hardin. Both answers were very helpful to put me right. THANKS ! ! !

For other newcomers who are thinking about this subject, it is
surprising how easy it is, if you get pointed to the right information
and/or the right tools.

For those other newby's I add the following URL's:

http://www.wolfenet.com/~jhardin/ipfwadm.html

http://www.wolfenet.com/~jhardin/invocation.html

http://www.tor.shaw.wave.ca/~ambrose/

The first URL of John D. Hardin's ipfwadm page gives most of the
information and links that you need, in particular concerning the dot
file generator program. The invocation page (second URL) gives essential
information on how to incorporate ipfwadm into your PPP set-up.

The third URL points to a kind of IPMASQUERADING HOWTO by "Ambrose
Au", which I have found to be very helpful in addition to the
information by John D. Hardin.

Ambrose 's page allows a download of a couple of HTML documents (a/o
through a tar) which touch on the configuration of the KERNEL (very
helpful to me was the part about the modules) and the configuration of
your system apart from the part that can be taken care of through the
dot file generator .

Absolutely tops for me was his advice to test the final set-up by using
a real IP number instead of a URL like redhat.com. Indeed I had
forgotten to take care of DNS. The real IP number (I used the one he
suggests, of the Linux Documentation Project) took the host that I was
trying to masquerade right through.

After I had put the IP number of the Domain Server of my ISP in the file
/etc/resolv.conf (after nameserver) on the host that is the one that
masquerades, even DNS worked fine! (I am a bit puzzled why the host
that has the modem, does not need this entry in /etc/resolv.conf)

Again a big vote of thanks to the people who help others to find their
way around Linux, like the many on this list!
