It basically defines the ports that will need to be masqueraded for those
specific protocols.

Yes, IP masquerading is supported in the 2.0 kernels.  There are of course
improved features in the 2.1, but not stability yet.

IP forwarding is used to route data between two interfaces, such as when
data needs to pass thru your local LAN to your ISP via your dialup PPP
modem link.
