hey everyone.. There was a security problem on my previous redhat5 box also and I'm writing to ask if anyone's ever seen anything like this before... Basically what happened was that I just randomly did a `ps aux` and saw to my horror that there were close to 2 or 3 dozen zombie processes running on the computer. It turns out that every non kernel process (ls, cd, etc.), in other words any compiled program ended in a zombie process. Now, I know that zombies occur when there are no parents to a child process ... usually those commands are spawned from a shell though, and I was logged in .. so there's the shell. Init should be there to collect the zombies for the most part.. and from what i recall .. Init was alive at that time. Has anyone ever seen anything like that ?? I've just now gotten curious to try and solve that problem .. eventually it ended up in a hacked mess, and had to do a full reinstall. Kinda sucks huh ? I hear that there are some problems setting up a firewall and keeping a fully functional QuakeWorld server..
