I think you need to run it like:
$> MEDIA/Disk1/runInstaller 

rather than change directory to it. Don't know why. In anycase, this page has 
helped me a lot to install oracle9i in 2 of my linux server. Assuming you're 
using oracle91 here it is:

It exlains the install in great details, including all the troubleshooting and 
solutions to problems you may encounter.
