I'm stuck using the ufs format on the disk.  

Cool.  I hope this means it is working.

Absolutely yes. To prevent this from happening, you should use a journaling
filesystem such as ext3, reiserfs, xfs, jfs, etc. Journal recovery is
(always?) faster then checking a non journalled filesystem.
