Because unicode is the future. For English language speakers it might seem unnecessary but for those of us who have to provide support for other languages it's a benefit. The main problem at the moment seems to be a bug in perl's unicode handling. Apparently that's fixed in rawhide (and presumably will be fixed in Fedora).
