The first thing to do is

        $ file core.xxxxx

You will get a response like:

        $ file core
        core: ELF 32-bit LSB core file Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV),
        SVR4-style, from 'program'

which tells you that the program "program" crashed to generate the file.
>From there, you are into the realm of debuggers such as gdb or ddd.
