I wish I had the time to dig deep into firewall rules. Keeping my web site up-to-date eats up all my time. But, it looks like I'll have to do that anyway.
Really, take a good look at Shorewall. You can likely get your firewall in shape the first time in under 15 minutes, and later making any changes takes but a few seconds. I'll be glad to help if you run into trouble, as I've gotten to know the software pretty well; also, the mailing list is low-traffic and very helpful (especially the author, who generally responds to questions in minutes rather than hours).
