It's not all that unreasonable. First of all, the different versions may very well link to different GUI library versions. They might take advantage of library features if the system has them installed, and integrate less elegantly (but still work) on systems that don't. Also, RPM doesn't detect whether files are physically on your system, it checks whether files or features are registered with the RPM database. How those features are registered (even where certain files live) is distribution-dependent, so SuSE packages may fail to recognize features when installed on an RH system and vice versa. (That's one drawback to an otherwise very useful system.) > Then, I've stayed away from RawHide, because I was under the impression that > this was alpha or beta releases only. The *packages* are generally test releases. The software that's contained in them may or may not be so. I install Rawhide packages on production systems with reasonable frequency, but they are usually standalone programs or subsystems (e.g., Mozilla). I am very wary of installing kernels, compilers, libraries, XFree86, etc., from Rawhide without explicit assurances from Red Hat support that they will work. If the library versions in Rawhide don't match mine, then I'll grab the SRPM and rebuild it. That often fixes dependency-related issues. If it doesn't work, I have to be prepared to back down. > So I found the RawHide version, after your email. Maybe. What features have been added to Aspell (or bugs fixed) that it might depend on? There *are* good reasons to alter an API/ABI as a program evolves, but it should not be done lightly. On the other hand, maybe rebuilding is all you need. > So, after all that, I've now got the RawHide version installed, and > *finally*, when I go to print preview, it isn't showing it in a cursive > italic font. > <snip> > > Perhaps because you're trying to use rpm packages from another > > distribution rather than those released from RedHat ? > > Again, ->abiword<- should need the same libraries, regardless of distro. > It's a bloody word-fucking-processor, not a bleeding-edge video game that > needs the release of NVidia's latest card that doesn't come out till next > year! The software should be *portable*, not that different between > releases. See above. The software probably is portable, but the RPM *is* the port and may not be portable itself. (Note: it's a *GUI* word processor. There's lots of movement in GUI libraries at the moment, and the apps are changing to keep up. That would make library dependencies critical.) > <snip> > > You really need to take your own advice. Everyone involved here would do well to cool off a bit, I think. We don't all already know each other's backgrounds, and it's not always obvious from the context of an e-mail, even if the author thinks it is. > > I'm grateful to someone when they give me help in what I ask for help in. > For the person who suggested OpenOffice.org, *sigh*, I recommend he search > the archives of this list for all the screaming and yelling over yes, it's > good, but agh! it's a *dog*, and slower and bigger than M$ Oriface, er, > Office. > > Now, if I can just figure out why it has a problem with gnome-print (which I > *assume* has no problem talking to lpRNG)....
