Short of invoking the ldap beast...can just unix pwd/account info be used?

When my unix login creds are the same as my samba acct (and they are)...it
would be nice to not have to maintain separate-but-equal pwd files
(smbpasswd and /etc/password).

You're kind of implying two separate/different passwords. Is samba keeping
the passwords in a different format?

You can use LDAP. I've done this and it works very well. There's still a NT
and unix apssword, but it's all in one database.
