2. When I do issue a "pppd demand call terra", sometimes it dials instantly and sometimes it sits there for a few minutes (one, sometimes three, sometimes five) before actually dialing the modem. Where could this wait time possibly be coming from? I've read _everything_ I can get my hands on and have no idea...

I don't know about your other problems allthough they *MAY* be related.
But the wait time seems logical to me. Think about it. pppd is in DEMAND mode.
This means that there has to be a DEMAND for internet before it will dial. When I start my server, it sets up demand mode at boot-up, but will not dial unless I start something that requires the internet. This could be almost immediate (when fetchmail for example wants to collect my mail) or not until I start Netscape to browse.
From what you're telling me you want 24/7 uptime. Why run demand at all then? It shouldn't be necessary right?
