Given the wide response of recommendations and problems, I have this advice to offer. If it does not work, try a shorter length of cable. I have seen with some motherboards, that they do not provide enough power to the mouse and keyboard ports and as such, a long KVM cable does not work. In these cases, the usual max length is 6 feet. And this is still true even if you were to use the high grade KVM cables. Useless for high density or wide spread machines.
I personally acquired a 4 port LinkSys KVM from my uncle and have then purchased 2 10 foot long Belkin KVM cables for it. No problems other than sometimes the selected port changes to port 1 (the factory startup default) , which I think has something to do with power spikes or brownouts , and my Kensington TurboBall does not fully function (common on most KVMs).
HTH but YMMV
