What are you going to be using this for? Are you talking about windows vs linux in a server environment? or desktop? if its desktop, i'd go with windows. Most people are already familiar with it, and its easy for just about any level of use to find software for it.

For server ... guess it depends on what you want. Too many people have knee-jerk reactions, bordering on religious fervor when it comes to discussing which OS to use. I use both of them. I like both of them. They both have good and weak points.

You first need to lay out what your usage is going to be before you can discuss which OS is the best choice.

You mention access .. again, server or desktop? server wise ... access is ok only for a site thats not very busy. If its just going to be a few internal workers hitting it, you will probably be fine. If its going to be a busy public site, then stay away from access. You'd need something like SQLserver, or postgres or mysql.

I havent used any desktop databases under linux. Although from what i hear, they are just as good as access. so in that regards you might be better off going with linux since its cheaper .. aka free :)

I find with linux you usually have more control, and the option to programmatically add or change things. However, i also find that the learning curve to just get the basic things up and running is still a lot steeper then it is under MS. However, while MS might be easier to get running, you dont always have as much options.

Without knowing what you need to do, i'd say for desktops go with windows. For servers, it all depends on your usage.

I know this is only kind of related to this list but I think some of you guys would be able to help me here. I work at a College
which prior to me coming here 1.5 years ago had only one programmer. He has been here 7 years and is in my opinion
not much other than a M$ Office guru. I am not the best either as most of my applications and programs I write are web based.
I'm pretty good with php, mysql, other web languages and now I am really trying to get involved with Python, which I love :-)
I also would like to convert myself to Linux. Currently I still have a few programs that I cannot get for Linux or even something
comparable.

Anyways, my question is could someone send me info links or anything like that that could aid me in explaining why Access
programming, if that is what you call it, and staying dependant to M$ for that matter, would not be a good thing to persue for our future. We are having a tech meeting soon
where we will be discusing our future direction and I want to go into that meeting with information and examples. Thank you
for any help, links, or information you could feed me.
