All rpm commands are hanging (no output...sits and does nothing) now:

rpm -qa  ---> hangs
rpm -qi httpd ---> hangs
up2date -l  ---> hangs
rpm -Uvh --force packagename.rpm  ---> hangs

rpm (with no arguments)  ---> works by displaying help
