These are LVM (Logical Volume Management, I think). Indeed it allows you
to have multiple physical partitions merge into a single logiciel one.
When I installed my RH9, I had the option to build one from the installer,
so there should be an utility somewhere to perform this after
installation. You might want to look in the system tools/utilities menu
for an item that would be called "disk management" or something or maybe
in the Control Center tool (or is it Control Panel?).
