The application (like redhat-config-xxx for example) displays on the
client machine and works fine for a period of time. Then, invariably,
the client machine starts tremendous disk activity and the application
locks up, the client machine is unavailable until the disk access ceases
in a few minutes.

I cannot figure out why this would cause disk activity at all on the
client. Moreover, I can't get a "top" running to see what's going on. If
I run "top" first it fails to update until the client stabilizes.

I have no idea nor do I know how but if the environment was screwed up
then I doubt that it would work at all.
