Hello All,

Thanks to all who sent in their ideas, suggestions and help. We tried
the card and tape drive in another machine, Dell Optiplex 240GX or
something like that and it worked right out of the box.

So that certainly rules out the (expensive) tape drive, RedHat Linux
(which I was doubting for a few secs) and the Linux Kernel as build by
RedHat.

Solution: The Dell Dimension 8300 has something wrong with it, it
barely holds Linux together as a server service. But the less Optiplex
seems to have a great time and is a good machine, I have had nothing but
problems with this machine (8300).

Thanks to all those who contributed.

        Cheers,

        Aly.
