To be honest, I can't get GNU time to even honor its own flags. It's also not working properly with respect to stderr redirection. I'm at a loss here. I prefer to use Perl anyways, but I would've like to get this working with time for you. In Perl, I can make use of the great benchmarking modules. If it's possible, I'd try to get your script accomplished in Perl.
