Sorry. I seem to have sacrificed the virgin of clarity on the altar of
impatience. Eschew obfuscation, that's what I always say. Ahem. Sorry.
Once upon a time, I had downloaded Communicator 4.02 from Netscape's
FTP server. I switched back and forth between the dynamically- and
statically-linked executables depending on whether I wanted a) to view
pages with tags for plugins I don't have without getting a bus error,
or b) to open multiple browser windows and not have the whole thing
dump core when I closed one of them.
So anyway, when I installed Red Hat 5.0 I sort of, um, forgot to, er
(*cough*) back a few things up, and had to download Communicator
again. Well, by then, the thing had become freely distributable, so I
got the binary 4.04 RPM's from a couple of different places. None of them
had the dynamically-linked executable in them.
I suppose I really should go back to Netscape's FTP server and have
another look. I was just surprised at the change.
