Hey Reuben,

    Just tried kword under redhat9 and it may be good enough to do what you
want.   You can insert a formula box and edit it with some simple controls.
Then highlight the formula box that surrounds your formula and right-click.
Uncheck the "inline" option which will allow your formula box to free-float
anywhere on the page.   Simply position it overtop of an inserted picture.
You can also insert an object-frame-formula which allows the formula to 
have a transparent background (ie. so it doesn't obscure any of the image
at all) but i found this a bit slow and klunky.
