1) booted up to the prompt to enter root password - entered root password
2) current dir is /root
3) run mount -n / -o remount,rw
4) cd /etc
5) vi fstab file
6) fiddle around and saved the file (tried at least 4 times before hitting
the jackpot)

Glad you got it working.  Sorry about the / deal.  AFAIK it should have
worked so I am trying to get a handle on what the situation was and what
you did to fix it.  I guess I will have to try this tomorrow at the
office on one of the lab machines.

can you post the commands you used?  should be in roots history file I
think but maybe not.
