No smartd on the system - did you have to install it separately or was it
already there from the OS install?

Well, that may be it, actually. :-)  Tell your dad to stop kicking my power
cable.  I'll stop kicking it too.  The cable seems secure, but I did notice
that the most recent time it "crashed" was coincidentally at the exact
instant that I pushed the box sidewas a little with my foot.
