Of course. If the hardware allows it, then either there is software to tell the hardware to perform its magic incantations or you can write the software if there is not. Try doing that with Windows or Mac OS X. And yes, I do know that OS X might be a tad bit easier that Windows since it's based on OSS (FreeBSD).
