Thanks guys.  Due to other problems, I updated my glibc.  This, in addition,
fixed my xmms segfault problem :)  (and a similar oo.org segfault problem that
I
later found out about...)

Sorry for the false alarm;  I had previously failed at a glibc update and
didn't have much hope for this new attempt, that's why I was looking for
other venues.

Lesson learned:  always get latest libs if weird things are happening...
even though it's quite painful on dial-up :(
