I'm going to add my $.02...

Anyone who tries to upgrade an OS with only 40MB of free space is just begging
for something to go wrong.  If I am wrong, I will be corrected, but I believe
that the RPM install saves the previous package goodies.  This will result
in more space being required.  This doesn't even include any new stuff that
needs to be installed.

But, you are right in that the install should look to see if there is enough
space left before preceeding.
