I upgraded a 7.1 install to 9 today and after a smooth looking install
other than lilo alterations not quite right I ran startx as root and the
splash screen came up and then hung after the first icon (window
manager) appeared. ctl alt F1 back to the starting vt and saw the
following message.

No fonts found; this probably means that the fontconfig
library is not correctly configured. You may need to
edit the fonts.conf configuration file. More information
about fontconfig can be found in the fontconfig(3) manual
page and on http://fontconfig.org
man fontconfig does not work:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] i386]# man fontconfig
iconv: illegal input sequence at position 205
package verifies ok rpm checksum also ok. I then reinstalled
fontcontrol again (had to use --force ) still no joy. Several hours of
maillist surfing and googling has yielded nada. Anyone have any ideas?
