Hi,
I have a problem with my X11 server under my root user. I'm really not
sure what happened. I logged out one day, and tried to log back in the
next day and all I get is some weird stuff from Gnome. I then have to
restart the x server using Ctrl+ALT+BACKSPACE to end the session. Then I
get this error msg repeated over and over until I hit Ctrl+C to get the
prompt:
Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that
you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS
locks due to a system crash. See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/
for information. (Details - 1: IOR file '/root/.gconfd/lock/ior' not
opened successfully, no gconfd located: No such file or directory 2: IOR
file '/root/.gconfd/lock/ior' not opened successfully, no gconfd
located: No such file or directory)

I tried looking at this web site and doing the things it advised.
However, they did not work. You should know that I am running an NFS
share from this computer, but the files that it needs are on on the
drive that linux is running from. This page really did not say anything
about the lock file 'missing'. It did mention that you could delete it
and try again, but the lock file isn't there. In fact the lock part of
this dir isn't here.
Thanks for any help.

David Smith
